Mat - Son of Battles

Posted by Tai’shar Hawaii on 19.01.01 00:00

I have heard a lot of theories on where gunpowder will eventually come from. Most say Shara. But there is a passage in A Crown of Swords that pretty much sums it up. It’s a dream prophecy of Egwene’s (p 202):

"Mat sat on a night-shrouded hilltop, watching a grand Illuminator’s display of fireworks, and suddenly his hand shot up, seized one of those bursting lights in the sky. Arrows of fire flashed from his clenched fist, and a sense of dread filled her. Men would die because of this."
Mat has always been intrigued by fireworks. Mat will harness gunpowder as a weapon. This I am pretty sure about.

wotmania says: I have to agree - Mat plus fireworks will equal gunpowder.

Elephant tie in

Mat will build a big heavy cannon.

How will he move it around?

Mat is meeting up with the Valan Luca's menagerie soon.

He will use the elephants to deploy cannon.

Good circus theory

I like that about the elephants being used to move the cannons. Keep in mind too that one of the inventors in Cahriehen (sp?) is fairly close to creating a steam engine.

Well, the explosive powder in the fireworks that Mat is always so curious about is already gunpowder, even if it's not known by that name. What Aludra is on the point of devising is the mechanism for launching a projectile using the powder. That's why she set Mat the riddle of her need for a bellfounder.

I don't know that the guns to be made will be so large as to require the s'redit to tow them, and I'm not sure that Valan Luca would agree to put his precious beasts to such a task. It may come later, when they meet up with the steam engine in Cairhien, that a rolling artillery is constructed.

Considering that the s'redit are from Seanchan, and Mat is destined to marry the DotNM, I don't really think that getting s'redit will be a problem.

I never thought of that....

...but now that you mention it it seems pretty obvious. Remember that guy in the Cairhien school who was building something that sounded like a steam engine? I'm thinking that by the end of the series we'll have colonial-esque inventions.

It doesn't matter if Valan Luca doesn't want to use the elephants (forget the name) that way; they belong to Cerandin (sp?) and she is the only one who can control them. Luca realy has no choice in the matter.

besides...

wasn't cerandin returned to her ranks as was indicated by Valan Luca being honored by Lady Suroth for harboring her and her s'redit? i am more in tune with the theory that Mat will use his connection to Tuon to rally some or all of the Seanchan in favor of the Light

guns

i think he will make guns with that gunpouder

yes

i beleave it too i beleave he will invent guns

Bang, bang.........

Guns are definately on the way, but in what form? Artillery probably (although I have doubts on mechanised guns, its too early, technologically-wise), but what about personal weapons (muskets, etc.)? Also, has anyone considered the idea of cannons on the Athan'Miere ships? That could cause huge problems for our friends from Seanchan!

Bellfounder for 'works. not guns

Posted by LrdPerrin on 29.06.02 20:32
i agree that the explosive powder in the fireworks could be used to manufacture guns I disagree that Aludra is on the point of devising a mechanism for launching a projectile. I think her sending mat to the bellfounder actually has to do with the making of the fireworks. Mat on the other hand i could see finding a bellfounder and then trying to shoot projectiles. I also had a stray thought about her being able to channel but that's another not well thought out post

Also Ibelvieve at one point mat was talking about how if one was to set a firework on its side it would go "a thousand paces" and thats basically a cannon right there.

Bingo

Posted by Absolutely No One on 18.06.03 03:13
Mat has already said that one of Aludra's devices could throw a firework a thousand paces. He also is familiar with using fireworks as a weapon since he used that set to break into the Stone of Tear with Julian Sandar in TDR.

I also saw this, and highly agree. Gunpowder, or some form of it will be made. He has very interesting thoughts on what the Illuminator 'Fire Tubes' could do, if placed on their sides... And who knows? Maybe Aludra will break down -finally- after some good kisses, and she'll spill all. Thus, guns are made!

Mats Military Deployment

Posted by crosswood on 05.03.05 02:16
I think Mat'll invent guns, not for any reason in particular, but mostly because of the way he trained the Legion of the Dragon. He trained ALL of them to use the most powerful projectile weapon that can be used by a relative amateur - Crossbows. He 'didn't have a pike in the lot' if I remember my quote correctly. I recall another quote from somewhere about ‘the ratio in the Band of the Red hand was two crossbowmen to every pikemen, or would be once the Band got them trained.’ Mat's memories make him a clever cookie - he knows that fewer men die if you project your power forward from your line. Mat’ll recognise the artillery as useful, then will speed up development to make muskets.

The bellfounder

Posted by shivan_the_hunter1 on 28.04.05 21:12
The reason for the bellfounder is to make the cannon for the the fireworks. To make a cannon ball go you need a lot of force behind it. And when I was watching the history channel on ancient weapon I learned that bell makers were brought in to make the first cannons because they were the only people able to make a tube strong enough to do what it was designed for, i.e Making a big explosion that throws a heavy ball at stuff. Thats why cannons look so much like long narrow bells.

i think the first form will be more like a mortar (light ordenance) as he was considering just tossing night flowers at the Seachean. Oh and on the bell founder and this is just a wild stab in the dark maybe she needs him to make... bells, gasp.

damn i was hoping...

Posted by spartanis on 01.03.06 07:57
THat he uses the idea of gunposer in sacks as a form of explosion as it lands in the middle of the field filled with Trollocs, sending it to there he would use Trebuchet to fire these sacks over.

I can actually envision hundreds of those pulled by horses, and all firing at random at the last battle

gad.. what a mess that would create...

In KoD Mat uses something similiar(in practice), to what you just proposed called slingmen. Basically throw big balls of gunpowder into enemies and have pellets around them... can anyone say "canister shot"?
