Aligning the Matrix Theory

Posted by SilverWeed on 23.01.01 00:00

In The Fires of Heaven (not sure exactly where, I know it's after Nynaeve and Elayne reach Salidar) there is one part where Nynaeve comments about how Elayne said something about "aligning the matrices" (I think it was spelled like that) while talking about making ter'angreal and sa' angreal. In other parts where they talk about forgotten Talents they say something about Aligning the Matrix. Maybe making these angreal is a Talent that very few have and this is why only Elayne knows how to do it (if it were more common then she would not have been forced to teach herself how to do it).

wotmania says: I like this theory, and can not recall having seen it anywhere on the site before... And it would also explain why none of the Forsaken have this ability - it is a rare Talent that none of them happen to have. I wonder if Aes Sedai in the Age of Legends with this Talent would make and sell specialized ter'angreal for people to give as gifts... I can just see Lews Therin walking into "Ter'angreal R Us" to find something special for Ilyena's birthday... But I digress... Good theory!

Aligning the Matrix

I always figured Aligning the Matrix was what was done to make ' Aes Sedai-wrought steel '. This is another one of the forgotten Talents. Besides, i agree with the theory that ter'angreal, angreal, and sa'angreal all have to be made with both halfs of the One Power. Kinda like the Stone of Tear. Women are good at water and air, but Men are better at Fire and Earth. by the way, this occured to me recently. Callandor rests in The Stone of Tear. Sword-that-is-not-a-sword. Sword in the Stone. Sound familar?

I like this theory, too, but I want to add something to it.
The Seanchan have a ton of chicks (it's okay to hate me for saying 'chicks' when referring to women - i'm pretty fed up with females right now and don't care) who can channel, both the sul'dam and damane.
On a sidenote, I think damane should be spelled dam'ane, but it's Jordan's writing, so screw it.
When the damane are made damane, they get a nice little present, the a'dam, an evil little device that makes a ball-and-chain look like an X-box for Christmas.
Where did all these a'dam come from?
Surely, they weren't all made before the Luthair Paendrag's departure, so some sul'dam or damane must have made them over in Seanchan.
So, some of them obviously have this talent, while the Aes Sedai don't.
Why, you ask?
I don't know, but suffice it to say this issue will be important as the Fall of the Seanchan plotline plays out.
We might even see it in the next book.

Stoplight at ninety miles an hour
On a bridge that was going up.
This was my life.
I have it now. I understand.
This thought that crushes my mind was once a man,
And your name goes on forever
And your name goes on and on.

Hmm...

Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself.

egwene?

We see later in the story that a'dam are quite simple to make because Elayne manages to recreate one on her first time. and anyhowz who remembers that when egwene was caught the sul'dam said that egwene might be one of the select few who could make a'dam because or her affinity with metals. this proves that the Seanchean are able to recreate a'dam but I doubt that they can make mor than that because the a'dam are REALLY simple ter'angreal.

stengthening metals

In Chapter 39, LOC, page 734, Egwene says "All very well to know,or example, that Aligning the Matrix makes metals stronger......"I think this refers to the making of cuendillar, not power-wrought weapons, as that was not lost after the Breaking, rather they just stopped making them because o the Three Oaths.

Mmm... This may have be said already elsewhere but...

Well, if anyone is interested in Physics, they know that in our world metallic atoms arrays themselves along a pattern specific to that metal. For example, pure copper arrays itself into something like a cube with an atom at each corner plus one atom in the center of that cube.

Furthermore, we know that any flaws (be it microscopic) in the smelting of mettalic objects diminish theirs resistances.

Actually, any object made of metal nowadays, even described as pure, is not 100% pure. There's still that 0,00000000001% of impurities that cannot be extracted (because the purer you want it, the more expensive the process will become).

Wouldn't 'Aligning the matrix' just mean that? Restoring the alignment of the metallic atoms so that the designed metallic object don't have any impurity thus any flaws?
That object would be exactly 100% the alloy you want it to be, with no molecular flaw (which naturally means it's stronger)?

Just my two cents...

Hope to read your point of view...
